The General Headquarters

The command center of the Allied Powers in Japan during post WWII. It was led by General Douglas MacArthur (五星上將麥克阿瑟).

Main Aims of the GHQ

  1. To dismantle Japan's military and to prevent future revenge and wars
  2. To create a democratic government and society in Japan

Important Changes

  1. The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy were dismantled, all war industries were converted to civilian use
  2. Leading Japanese military and political figures were tried and punished for war crimes
  3. Large lands were redistributed to farmers to reduce the power of landowners
  4. The 1947 constitution was enacted, introducing changes like granting civil freedom and promoting gender equality
  5. Democratize the economy and breaking up large companies to encourage competition and reduce economic concentration
  6. The education system was restructured to promote democratic values, critical thinking, and equal rights
