The General Headquarters
The command center of the Allied Powers in Japan during post WWII. It was led by General Douglas MacArthur (五星上將麥克阿瑟).
Main Aims of the GHQ
- To dismantle Japan's military and to prevent future revenge and wars
- To create a democratic government and society in Japan
Important Changes
- The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy were dismantled, all war industries were converted to civilian use
- Leading Japanese military and political figures were tried and punished for war crimes
- Large lands were redistributed to farmers to reduce the power of landowners
- The 1947 constitution was enacted, introducing changes like granting civil freedom and promoting gender equality
- Democratize the economy and breaking up large companies to encourage competition and reduce economic concentration
- The education system was restructured to promote democratic values, critical thinking, and equal rights
